Getting Started with Invisalign®: What to Expect

Oct 01, 2023

More and more people are choosing clear aligners over traditional braces these days. So, if you’ve been wanting to go through orthodontic treatments using clear aligners, you’re not alone. If you’ve been looking into clear aligners, you might be wondering how effective they are and what the process looks like.

One of the most popular and well-known brands of clear aligners is Invisalign®, and they’ve been around since 1998. We offer Invisalign here at Llanos Dental Group located in Miami Lakes, Florida, and our team headed by Laura Llanos, DMD, has put together some information on what to expect from the Invisalign process before you get started.

Explaining Invisalign

Invisalign is a specific orthodontic treatment that uses a series of clear aligners in order to straighten your teeth and encourage them to move to a certain location. Typically, Invisalign is picked over traditional braces that use metal wires and brackets. This is because Invsialign uses a material called SmartTrack® that consists of a flexible thermoplastic that’s clear and comfortable.

This orthodontic treatment can be used to address a variety of dental issues such as:

  • Problems with underbite, overbite, or crossbite
  • Open bite
  • Gapped teeth
  • Crowded teeth

However, it is important to note that Invisalign may not be effective to straighten out teeth that are severely crooked or overcrowded.

How the Invisalign process works

When you first come in to see us at Llanos Dental Group for Invisalign, our team evaluates your dental issues and determines if Invisalign is an appropriate treatment for you. We then take 3D scans of your teeth to create the perfect plan that will shift your teeth to the proper place.

After that plan is created, your series of custom clear aligners is made. The aligners work by slowly putting pressure on your teeth to gradually move them to where they need to go. About every one to two weeks, you’ll switch out your current aligner for the next one in the series. You need to wear each aligner for about 20-22 hours a day for optimal results.

The benefits of Invisalign

While many people choose Invisalign due to the fact that it’s discreet, there are also many other advantages this treatment has to offer such as:

  • The aligners are removable
  • It’s made up of comfortable material
  • You can eat whatever you want
  • Decreased risk of dental emergencies

You can reap all of these benefits as long as you’re consistent with wearing them so they can be effective.
